The Not Back To School Blog Hop: School Room

Not Back to School Blog HopWe had a quite large school room last year, but we moved from Alaska to Savannah this summer. That means a new (smaller) house on post. And a smaller school room. It’s always interesting trying to fit your things into a new home. I think that I have things the way I want them. I’m not going to spend too much time on it, because we’re moving again in less than a year. Thank you Army.:)

We have a lot of bookshelves (and these are only the ones in the schoolroom.  I have 3 in my room, and another 3 in the kids rooms – we’re addicted!)

The books are normally in order by subject and the history is put into chronological order.  I haven’t done that yet.  I was happy just to get them out of the boxes and onto the shelves.  It’s messy and it’s bugging me, but it will have to wait until later…

My husband built this piece of furniture to house our manipulatives and other various school supplies.

One of my favorite purchases is our art carts, which hold everything from paper, glue, craft supplies, crayons, markers, etc.
It’s nice, because the entire drawer comes out and can be place on the table.

Of course, the downside to that is that my 2 year old can also pull the drawers out….

I don’t like the thought of the kids doing art projects on my dining room table. We had a second one in our last home, but we got rid of it before we moved. I bought a folding table from Sam’s Club to serve as our school table this year.  I am hoping that it will be big enough.

I bought myself a chair to sit on. The thought of being in a folding chair for hours each day did not appeal to me. This one is not very comfortable either, but it will do for this year. I liked it, because it’s wide enough for me to fit a kid next to me and help them out – or a monkey.:)

I have the all-important map on the wall, 2 dry-erase boards, and a bulletin board.

I bought a box for each of the children to put their workbooks and such in. That way, they can carry their stuff wherever they need to.

I think that’s it!  We didn’t have room in this new space for the monstrous desk I used to sit at – or the desktop computer.  I usually use the laptop now though, and the older two kids have their own laptops to do their work on, so it works out fine.

Oh, wait – one more thing! What schoolroom is complete without a talking Einstein bobblehead (or is it baublehead)?? We picked him up at the Smithsonian this past May.  Ellie just had to have it.:)

Love your classroom, I am a nerd so I always love setting up my school room each year. I am always changing the same room instead of doing a new room each year. :-)

LOL! We have the same bobble head! DS just had to see the video.

I need that booblehead! And that’s a giant move–from Alaska to Savannah. I’m from down the Savannah way:) Hope you get settled in and enjoy a nice Fall. I think all your shelves look great–I like having everything so accessible to the kids. I tend to pack everything up each day. I may change that.

Oooo, shelves and shelves of books makes me happy. I don’t bother with subject or chronological shelving; it’s too hard to maintain and the kids wouldn’t be able to do it. I simply shelf in large categories (like “preschool books”, “books we’re using this year”, “books we used last year”) and then shelf by book height. Okay, shelving by book height isn’t the most organized way to go about it, but it looks good to my eyes and it’s easy for even little ones to maintain.

Anyway, I loved seeing you photos of your school room. Thank you for sharing on the NOT Back-to-School blog hop.

I totally think our rooms were made by the same designer. :) Love it!!

What a great space you have, thanks for letting me take a peek inside. I love the color-coded organization of the binders and the BOOKS! Where did you get your art carts and those linking cubes with the words on them? Have a great year!

Great job! You are crazy organized. I wish I were. Not that I’m unorganized, just not AS organized as you. James Bond is Army too, so I know what you mean about setting up a new house and all the challenges that come with it.
You have loads of books! James Bond thinks *I* have a lot. I even get rid of them (much to my distress) every time we PCS to make sure we’re not over our weight limit.

We have so many bookshelves, and there are still books that have no shelf to sit on. I like your carts, they are great! And, of course, the monkey and the bobblehead are great touches! I hope you have a fun and blessed school year.

Thank you for posting! I found you on the Not Back to School Blog Hop, and it is very encouraging to hear that homeschooling is possible and thriving in a military home! My family and I are not quite to that stage in our lives yet (LadyBug just turned 2), but when that time comes I know we can be confident that it can work. Great room by the way! Something that I would love to model my own classroom after someday!
