2010-2011 Read Alouds

It has taken me quite some time to compile this list. These are the books that I plan on reading aloud to the kids this school year. We are studying U.S. History and are making our way through The History of US series by Joy Hakim. I tried to choose literature that would correspond to the things they are going to be learning about.

The Little House on the Prairie series, by Laura Ingalls Wilder
American Tall Tales, by Mary Pope Osborne (we have both the book and the CD)
American Tall Tales, by Jim Weiss (on CD)
Pocahontas, by D’Aulaire

George Washington, by D’Aulaire
Justin Morgan Had a Horse, by Marguerite Henry
Caddie Woodlawn, by Carol Ryrie Brink
Hostage on the Nighthawk, by Dave and Netta Jackson
Dangerous Journey, by Oliver Hunkin
Amos Fortune, Free Man, by Elizabeth Yates
Paddle-to-the-Sea. by Holling C. Holling
Tree in the Trail, by Holling C. Holling
Calico Bush, by Rachel Field

Wonderful read aloud list. We’re doing alot of the same. This week we’re starting a four week study on American Indians then moving into explorers and should arrive in the colonies just in time for Thanksgiving. Enjoy! I have the Truthquest series which lists great read alouds, but the best I’ve found for our history program is All through the Ages Literature Guide by Christine Miller. Have a great week!
