OH! I feel your “pain” We moved around the corner while in Kansas to get a bigger nicer house. We literally walked our fully decorated Christmas tree over to the new house! A lot of work..But well worth it in the end.

This is our first base but we were off base for the first year. It definitely cost us more but good housing is REALLY hard to get out here. A year later an opening came for on base housing and we were able to get it. We gave up some sq ft but it was worth it. Saved money, neighbors who spoke our language, (There’s a German unit out here.) and much more convenient.

hello!! We owned our own house in VA. We lived there for six years before we sold it. Now we’ve moved five times in ten years. I was grateful to get housing in Japan, it made it much more convenient for the kids activities. WA wasn’t really a necessity but because I was eight months pregnant when we moved there, it made it easier. Plus, the housing was really nice and large. Here in CA, its pretty small but we couldn’t afford to live in town. Utilities would kill us in the summer when the heat is so bad. That’s why this time, we opted to live in the fifth wheel and travel during the summer. Next summer, we’ll be traveling across country to visit my family and be gone for months. My hubby will move into the barracks then. Oh, we’re navy for anyone reading this.

I concur with Dianne. We are an Air Force family also. We have lived in housing once and that was at the Yongsan Army base in Seoul, Korea. And I wish we hadn’t. We had 890 square feet and both my husband and I were Captains at the time. Do you know what our BAH would have gotten us in downtown Seoul in the late 90s? I could have had a PENTHOUSE!!! But we were so busy and didn’t have a lot of time to secure housing so quick was the priority for us. I wish we had more time and more foresight to look.

We always check out the base housing where ever we live, at locations where the housing was large enough and in good enough condition, of course there was a waiting list. In Omaha there was no waiting list, but the lack of basement in Tornado Alley was disconcerting.

We owned houses twice, once near Patrick AFB, which we sold and made out nicely. The other was near Raleigh, NC (about an hour north of Ft. Bragg) and that was more difficult to sell and didn’t quite break even. We are renting off base now and did pretty well this time around. This is the largest house we’ve ever lived in.

You know we prefer to live off! I think if the kids were all older, high school/middle school, it would be more important that we were on base so they could be free to walk and take advantage of all the activities. This could be our last off post choice though too! If we get out from here… then there is no more choice. If we stay in, then we go to the SMA next and for 10 months, I’m planning on the base housing. After that…. depends on the E9 housing I guess. Like you, we’re a bit big so it’s hit or miss on the size and availability. Soon enough you’ll have special housing for Andy’s position anyway.

My sister is military (BIL is Air Force Major) and they usually live off. Most of the base housing where they’ve been leaves a bit to be desired, apparently.
