Oasis in the Desert

I was taking pictures for a local shelter and brought my kids along with me.  The property is like a little oasis in the desert.  Trees, vines, and green grass!!

While we were there, one of my kids managed to find a handful of tiny frogs….

They begged and begged to keep them, but I made them put them back in the wet grass.  They would have dried up at our house!

Then, my other daughter found an injured hummingbird.  We think that something was wrong with his neck.  He wasn’t able to fly properly – a few inches and he’d fall over.  I don’t think that he was a baby, just starting to fly.  He kept turning his head to the side in a strange position.

She picked him up and let him drink from a flower.

She really wanted to bring him home also, but thankfully there was someone coming to pick him up and feed him from an eyedropper. I hope that he can be nursed back to health.  It was very strange to see a hummingbird not moving a million miles an hour.

Have any of you ever nursed an injured hummingbird before?

Wonderful post. The Trumpet Vine is so pretty and those little frogs, so cute. Oh my that little hummingbird is darling but so sad it was hurt. I loved that your daughter helped it to feed and hopefully it’s on the mend now. We found a dead one outside the swimming pool area where my granddaughter was taking lessons so we buried it.

Cool post! I think it’s neat that the kids have these interactions with the animals. Are there any veterinarians in your future? ;)

Beautiful! I’m in central IA now. Isn’t your family from here? Do you need any genealogy stuff?
