Our Travels: Zion National Park

We wanted to hit at least one “new” national park while on our travels and we’d heard nothing but great things about Zion, so that’s where we headed.

The only problem, was that it was Labor Day weekend.  There was a LOT of traffic going in and out of the park.  The parking lot to the visitor’s center was full and in order to get in the park, we would have had to have hopped on a bus in town to get in.  I was not up for that.  We were able to drive through the park, but not able to see certain parts of it.  It was still worth the drive though and it would definitely be worth visiting again off season.

There is a northern-western section of the park called Kolob Canyon which is spectacular and not in the main section. But it is small – about a 5 mile drive – so it may have been packed, too. We hit Yosemite on Labor Day Sunday about two years ago and were stuck in a two hour traffic jam and saw nothing but the cars ahead and behind us! Went the following year on a non-holiday Wednesday and it wasn’t much better. Just not enough parking. Someone needs to come up with a better plan.

We drove the Kolob Canyon section on our way south and it was much less-traveled than the other part of the park!! When we went through the main area, it was just insane. I definitely like going in the off season. :)
