How my kid became a geography genius

Ok, so I’m exaggerating a bit.  Lexie’s probably not going to win the national geography bee or anything, but she’s good.

I think it’s partially because we’ve met so many wonderful people from around the world and she likes to find where they live on the map.

But the main reason is a simple game on the Sheppardd Software site.  They have a whole section of geography games at various levels.

You choose a region of the world to work on {so far Lexie has focused on Europe and Africa}.

On the first level, you simply click on a country and it says the name to you.

The next level, it states the name of the country and you have to click on it on the map {borders are shown} and you can choose to do it by region or by the entire continent.

The levels get progressively harder and harder. In this one, you have to drop the country into it’s correct location.

Level 9 is DIFFICULT.  None of my kids have worked their way up to this one yet.  You actually have to rotate the country, change the size, and put it on the blank map.

I’ve now added this game to my childrens’ homeschool work 1-2 times a week.  I’ve really noticed the improvement in their geography knowledge.  Nick {6} can list many of the countries in Europe – and not the “easy” ones like Germany and France.  He rattles off Slovakia, Belarus, Lithuania.  It’s impressive.   And the nice thing is that they’re having fun since they’re playing a game.  They play it over and over and over again, trying to get 100%.  This is a very easy way to get your kids to learn the countries of the world (and the states!).
