Our Travels: Fort Leavenworth

When people hear Fort Leavenworth, they naturally think of the prison.  It doesn’t sound like a very nice place.  There is a prison there, and what’s left of the old disciplinary barracks (I actually ate lunch in the 12th Brick, a sandwich place inside the old building), but there is so much more to the area.

We recently spent two lovely weeks there in the peak of autumn and I have to say that it was absolutely gorgeous.

We must have hit it just right, because the leaves were changing such beautiful colors.  I was so happy to be able to experience autumn this year (El Paso doesn’t really have many trees, so no colors).

I was stalking this poor little squirrel, trying to get some pictures of him.:)

This is a monument to the Buffalo Soldiers.

Leaves!! Tori was kicking and playing in them.  I really wanted to make a huge pile and jump in it, but we were in a very public place.:)

The cemetery on post.Fort Leavenworth is a gorgeous post with so many historic homes from the late 1800s.  I really hope that we have a chance to go there again.  The only complaint that I have is that the PX and commissary close very early.  I guess I’m used to being on a large post now, with longer hours.
