I always try to make sure that we do at least one art project a week. It doesn’t always happen. Real life happens and art is usually the first thing that’s cut from the schedule when we run out of time.
Anyway, we’ve been studying a different artist each week and I try to find a project that relates to them. I’ve used two different books – Great American Artists for Kids and Discovering Great Artists. This project came from the latter.
I suppose I’m more traditional in my artistic tastes, but I think that Picasso had some strange pieces of artwork. The kids had a good time making this project – although they were a bit hesitant to cut up their portraits at first. Who wants to see their hard work in pieces?
The project was simple. I had them draw a portrait of someone (or themselves) and then cut it into pieces and paste it in a different arrangement on a piece of construction paper. Here are a couple of the final products:
